Big Tiny Steps

F**k the Reddit doom and gloom. YOU. CAN. DO. THIS.

Based on past experience attempting to get off of Adderall and from what I’ve observed in other people I know trying to get unhooked from highly-addictive drugs, this is what often happens:

  1. Over the course of days or even weeks, you are successfully lowering your dosage or stopping outright. All is good, and you’re thinking, “hmm, ok, this isn’t so bad after all”, until…
  2. BAM! Enter the “rebound” withdrawals. You’ve just been hit over the head with major dose of “not so fast, hotshot!” as those nasty physical, mental, and emotional symptoms rear their ugly head again.

I liken it to the beach, where the withdrawal symptoms are like a tide receding back into the ocean before coming back crashing down deep into dry land.

Going with the Flow

So rather than trying to fight the overwhelming force of the “tide”, my plan is to simply float along with it.

What does that look like?

I am thinking it would be a pattern like this:

  1. Go down in dosage in 2 small increments, one incremental reduction per week (in my case, by 2.5 mg per week)
  2. At the end of week 2, go back UP an increment for a week
  3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 until there are no remaining increments and you’re off the drug completely

Adderall Weaning Schedule V1

So this is my first draft, which will be subject to expand, contract, or change in any way necessary to make the process as painless as possible:

Starting from 20mg per day and splitting 5mg tablets in half as needed

Week 1: Reduce to 17.5 mg per day (3.5 x 5 mg tablets).
Week 2: Reduce to 15 mg per day (3 x 5 mg tablets).
Week 3: Increase to 17.5 mg.
Week 4: Reduce to 15 mg.
Week 5: Reduce to 12.5 mg per day (2.5 x 5 mg tablets).
Week 6: Increase to 15 mg.
Week 7: Reduce to 12.5 mg.
Week 8: Reduce to 10 mg per day (2 x 5 mg tablets).
Week 9: Increase to 12.5 mg.
Week 10: Reduce to 10 mg.
Week 11: Reduce to 7.5 mg per day (1.5 x 5 mg tablets).
Week 12: Increase to 10 mg.
Week 13: Reduce to 7.5 mg.
Week 14: Reduce to 5 mg per day (1 x 5 mg tablet).
Week 15: Increase to 7.5 mg.
Week 16: Reduce to 5 mg.
Week 17: Reduce to 2.5 mg (0.5 x 5 mg tablets).
Week 18: Increase to 5 mg.
Week 19: Reduce to 2.5 mg.
Week 20: Discontinue completely (0 mg).

In addition, I will be keeping a copy of this schedule (which, as mentioned, may be modified over the course of my “escape”) in a shared Google Spreadsheet that you are free to copy and adapt for your own purposes.
