A no sugar added, sweet and spicy BBQ sauce naturally sweetened with Medjool Dates! Tasty, healthy BBQ sauce, without all the junk!

I have a sweet tooth, so going off sugar was a challenge. However, not as much as you might expect. Being the total food addict that I am, I searched for alternatives that would still satisfy my cravings for sweet flavor without all the junk.

Enter Medjool Dates…

Medjool Dates are like what would happen if caramel was all like “Hey I’m pretty awesome but let’s double down and make me a fruit too”. Seriously. They are sweet and delicious, while also being full of vitamins and nutrients that can help give you a natural energy boost. They are my go to sweetening agent, so I was thrilled to get some of them from Natural Delights to make a recipe with. The Medjool dates from Natural Delights are huge, rich in flavor and are grown with no pesticides and additives.

These dates are so soft and yummy that it is a wonder I don’t eat them straight from the box (actually maybe I do…)

My preferred way of eating them is in raw energy bars and bites. However I have been wanting to branch out with them lately, which brings us to this Barbecue sauce.

**NOTE** This recipe is free of refined sugar/sugar substitutes, however it IS made with dates which contain natural sugars

Sugar Free Bourbon Street Barbecue Sauce

Since eating healthier, I have been avoiding processed and sugary foods so barbecue sauce is definitely out for me. But this date sweetened barbecue sauce has rocked my world, and now I foresee LOTS of barbecue sauce in my future. Yum!

Now when I made this, I was making Bourbon Street Chicken for my family. Traditionally, Our recipe calls for soy sauce so the version with sugar ends up a lot darker and saltier. I was wanting to make something that was also soy free with less sodium, so for this recipe I used Coconut Aminos. I first tried them at the Veg Expo, and they are now my go to soy sauce substitute.

Back to the sauce.

My family had Bourbon Street Chicken but I had… Bourbon Street Cauliflower!? What!!?

This was for no other reason than I was just feeling creative… and in the mood for meatless.

This barbecue sauce was sweet, slightly spicy… just how Bourbon Street Barbecue Sauce should be. Also its vegan, gluten free and Paleo for all my specialized diet friends out there! Oh yeah and did I mention it’s sugar free? Because it totally is and rocks anyways!

This recipe was inspired by Natural Delights Medjool Dates who were kind enough to send me some for recipe development. The opinions about this product are my own, in fact, I reached out to them because I am just such a huge fan of their dates, which are a total pantry staple in my home!

Instructions
  1. Take 4 Natural Delights Medjool dates and remove the pits. place in a bowl and just cover with boiled hot water (I just put the kettle on and covered with the boiling water). Let sit until dates are softened (at least 10 minutes).
  2. Place dates and a couple of tablespoons of the hot water into the blender. Add the remaining ingredients and blend until smooth.
  3. Transfer the blended sauce mixture into a saucepan and heat until starts to bubble on medium heat. Reduce heat to simmer and continue to cook for about 5-10 minutes, stirring well.
Recipe Notes

This sauce is traditionally made with soy sauce. You could modify this to include soy however, coconut aminos are a better option if you are going for low sodium.

This sauce tastes best warm. I made this on roasted cauliflower and served on rice, however the sauce is traditionally used on chicken.

The sky is the limit! Use for grilling, dipping or whatever else you fancy!
