I know, not the prettiest comparison!

However it’s completely accurate. Let me tell you why.

I have always had the best of intentions with the worst follow through. This has led to giant hauls of fruits and vegetables that have languished in the fridge while I sat on the couch eating Cheetos. I was always better at buying healthy food then I was at actually consuming it.


In my post about clean eating I talked about how I began to love green smoothies. I searched and searched on Pinterest for smoothie recipes and filled my freezer with frozen fruits and my fridge with vegetables. I tried so hard to follow the recipes but always felt that I wasn’t getting it right, or I had so much food going to waste.

But Why Stew?

The history of stew is that it was made up of basically scraps, things that would have gone to waste otherwise. It was an economical option for creating a meal out of very little, and minimizing waste.
Once I began too look at smoothies in this way I became less frustrated with following gorgeous recipes, and found an economical and waste free method of eating clean.

How I learned to throw out recipes and embrace my inner smoothie chef

It was only when I threw out the recipes and started to utilize leftovers that I really got into a smoothie groove.

This means that if I bought fruit or vegetables and had leftovers about to go bad, I would stick it in bags and freeze it.
Leftover lettuce from salad? In the freezer. Weird getting-shrivelly blueberries? Get thee to the freezer!

After I began to incorporate more greens into my smoothies, I would buy up marked down bags of salad or spinach and freeze it up that day so that it would be ready for smoothies. If there were cucumbers (one of my favorite vegetable bases) or other veggies on sale, I buy it, cut it up and make giant bags to pop into the freezer.
Alternatively, I will make cubes of other vegetables (such as celery or carrots) by putting them in the blender with water and then freezing them in ice trays. The trick when using these is to only use 1 cube to ensure the taste will not be too overpowering.

The important thing to remember is that you can use this method to minimize the amount of food that you have go to waste. A good example of this is that after my sons birthday party I had half full vegetable and fruit platters that did not get eaten at the party. I put all of it into bags, or made cubes out of it.

As you begin to make your smoothies, you will learn the combinations that you like. Although I don’t have recipes, I do have certain combinations that I frequently use.

What Typically Goes into the Freezer Smoothie StashCoconut milk ice cubes

Basically my freezer stash for smoothies looks like this:

  • Large bags of fruit- pineapple, mango, strawberries, and berry blend (depending on mood and whats on sale)
  • Home packed bags of cucumber, parsley, kale, spinach and odds and ends of fruit
  • Ice cubes of blended up veggie odds and ends or coconut milk cubes (you could also use regular dairy milk or yogurt)

When I make smoothies (which is often because it is a great way for everyone in the family to consume more fruits and vegetables), I just take handfuls of combinations from the items above and blend them up. I blend mine with water rather than milk, juice or yogurt because the calories in a smoothie can be comparable to many desserts when you aren’t mindful of this, and Id prefer they be coming from the nutrient dense fruits or vegetables.

A Note About Yields

One downside with this method is that I often cant tell how much I will actually be making. I use mason jars for my smoothies and cant always tell if I will get 1 jar or 2 (this also depends on the amount of water or milk/yogurt you are using). However, the plus side of using mason jars is that you can store them in the fridge and it only takes a shake before they are ready to drink later or the next day.
